[tex]-3(x + 3)= -3(x + 1) - 5[/tex]

Expand the multiplication on both sides.
[tex]-3x - 9 = -3x - 3 - 5[/tex]

Combine like terms.
[tex]-3x - 9 = -3x - 8[/tex]
Add 9 to both sides.
[tex]-3x = -3x + 1[/tex]
Add 3x to both sides.
[tex]0 = 1[/tex]
An answer like this means there is no possible solution for x.
