The difference between the solutions to the equation x^2=a is 30. What is a? Show that your answer is correct.

solution:

x˄2 = a ⇒ x = ±√a

 

The difference between the solutions is

√a - (-√a) = 2√a = 30 ⇒ √a = 15

 

Therefore,

a = 225.
