A glicoprotein consists on a protein attached to a short carbohydrate (an oligosaccharide), whereas a glycolipid consists on a lipid attached to a short carbohydrate. An example of glycoiproteins is the immunoglobulin, which are antibodies (immune system). Some glycolipids are also related to immune response. In both cases, the lipid part is inserted in the cell membrane.
