We look for two integers which multiply to +12 but add to -8 and we find those numbers by looking at the factors of 12={1,2,3,4,6,12}

We find that by picking 6 and 2,6×2=12 but 6+2 is not -8 so we tweak that as -6 and-2

By so doing, now -6×-2=12,-6+(-2)=-8

so we factor to get (x-2)(x-6)
