x + [tex]\frac{1}{4}[/tex] x = 60 ( multiply through by 4 to clear the fraction )

4x + x = 240 , that is

5x = 240 ( divide both sides by 5 )

x = 48

smaller number = [tex]\frac{1}{4}[/tex] × 48 = 12

The 2 numbers are 12 and 48
