“More clear” vs “Clearer”: when to use “more” instead of “-er”?

Usually, words with few syllables use the -er, -est, form in comparison whereas the "more" and "most" form are used with polysyllabic words. However, some words such as the example you gave can be used with both forms and are completely correct, regardless of the form.
