According to the CONTINUAL - ACTIVATION THEORY, dreaming is a by-product of our brain processing what it has learned during the day.

This theory was developed by Jie Zhang in 2004. He claimed that this theory argues that these dreams we have are part of the brains consolidation of working memories into long-term memories.
