There was a jizya, or tax on the exchange of goods and travel if you were non-Muslim. There was also social, religious and government pressure to convert to Islam, as non-Muslim merchants would not be permitted to live in the Muslim Empire for more than a year if they did not convert. They would also recieve less business from Muslims, who made up a large part of the population in the Muslim Empire. Your belongings could also be siezed by the governing forces at any time.
