Having a standardized diagnostic classification system with agreed-upon psychological definitions is useful in promoting agreement among professionals and allowing mental health research to be more standardized. A lot of these standard classifications are outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, written by the American Psychiatric Association.
